Fountains Lost to History

As originally conceived, water fountains were designed to be functional, guiding water from creeks or reservoirs to the residents of towns and villages, where the water could be used for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. To produce water flow through a fountain until the late 1800’s, and create a jet of water, required gravity and a water source such as a spring or lake, situated higher than the fountain. Typically used as memorials and commemorative structures, water fountains have inspired travelers from all over the world all through the centuries. Crude in style, the 1st water fountains didn't appear much like modern fountains. The first known water fountain was a rock basin carved that served as a container for drinking water and ceremonial purposes.
